Our Teachers Say

“Our English sessions are focused on the foundational skills essential for success at GCSE level and beyond. Whilst the topics and texts can be tailored to students’ interests or match what they are studying in school, each session will focus on developing their ability to extract and infer information, analyse writers’ methods, and write critically and perceptively. In addition to this, spelling, punctuation, and grammar practice is embedded within lessons to combat the lack of explicit literacy teaching at secondary level: a problem that has been recently outlined in Ofsted’s latest subject report. We believe that the key to success is to first have enjoyment of the subject. Therefore, our sessions allow students to cement their skills through a variety of activities which appeal to different learning styles. Through creativity and flexibility, we aim to inspire a love of English which in turn helps students to excel academically.”

“The English curriculum incorporates Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Skills in these areas are developed throughout Primary and Secondary education.

For me, effective teaching and learning are based on relationships, and when teaching English, there are many opportunities to build these. Whether developing an interest in reading; drafting a piece of writing together; listening to each other’s ideas; or contributing suggestions or questions in discussion, all offer moments to not only learn the skills, but to learn more about each other.

The teacher-student relationship creates and supports a positive learning experience in which the teacher can identify the student’s individual learning needs, whilst the student can feel confident enough to voice their thoughts. This sense of ownership contributes to effective learning.

Feeling heard in a small group or individual teaching setting is a key benefit of tuition. It promotes skills and confidence for the journey through education and beyond.

By creating many of my own resources, I develop lessons which are tailored to individual students, whilst keeping within the national curriculum and examination requirements.

Skills are learned and reinforced through a range of activities, often based on extracts from modern or traditional literature, or current topical issues. This encourages reading whilst demonstrating that education is not separate from life, but is a way of learning more about its complexities, ourselves, and others.”

At Skills Tuition Centre, we are dedicated to providing personalised and comprehensive support in both primary Maths and English to help every student thrive. Our approach is tailored to meet the individual needs of each child, ensuring that we address any gaps in their learning and boost their confidence along the way.

Before starting our sessions, we conduct a thorough analysis of each student’s needs. This enables us to design and plan lessons that are specifically aimed at helping them move forward and achieve their full potential. Our goal is to create a positive and encouraging learning environment where every child feels supported and motivated to succeed.

In our Maths sessions, we offer targeted support in both arithmetic and reasoning, helping students to build a strong foundation and develop critical thinking skills. Our English sessions focus on enhancing reading fluency and comprehension, as well as deepening the children’s understanding of grammar and punctuation. We also emphasise the practical application of these skills in various contexts, preparing students to excel in all areas of their academic journey.

We believe that every child has the potential to achieve great things, and we are committed to providing the tools and support they need to succeed. Join us as we embark on this educational journey together, and let’s unlock your child’s full potential!”

“The main focus of my role is to support young children with their English and Maths, following the national curriculum.

When planning how to teach a child, I start by talking to them and getting to know them. It is important for me to understand the child’s perspective, as this allows me to plan how to teach them. I listen to their speech, interests, likes and dislikes, culture and background, and how they feel about school to gain an insight into their learning style. This extra personal time is one of the benefits of tutoring; the amount of time a teacher with 30 pupils can give is limited.

The Department for Education has clear frameworks for each key stage, so we know what the statutory requirements are for English and Maths.

For example, in Year 2, children are expected to know how to tell the time, how to multiply and divide by 2, 5, and 10, and how to count and use money. Children can often use money easily when doing worksheets, but when faced with real money, they freeze. Activities such as “playing shops” with a few items and some real money are fun for the children, but also allow them to use classroom theory in real life, practising addition and subtraction, as well as conversational skills.

In English, Year 2 children should be able to read, and compose short pieces of creative writing. They are expected to understand and identify verbs, nouns, and adjectives, as well as how to conjugate irregular verbs to the correct tense. Like with other subjects, bringing in art, songs, stories, puppets, and games helps to keep English interesting and relevant for pupils.

My aim is to support children by working in partnership with parents and guardians. I look forward to being part of your child’s learning journey.”
